Claude Grison, Director of Research at the CNRS, has been awarded a prize for her work on soil decontamination by plants. The originality of her research lies in the fact that she has not only identified plants capable of absorbing metallic or chemical molecules stored in the soil or in water, and therefore capable of cleaning up former industrial or mining sites. But in addition, these elements absorbed by the plants are then reused as raw material, i.e. the leaves of the metal-eating plants are dried, crushed and used in powder form in chemical reactions requiring metal. The result is 100% plant-based metal catalysts. Several start-ups have already been created to commercialise this research.
