Crusoe, the combination of nature and ecological chemistry in a 100% natural mosquito repellent spray
Boulogne-Billancourt, 28 February 2022 – At the PharmagoraPlus trade fair on 12 and 13 March, Bioprotection Laboratories will be presenting a preview of Crusoé, a unique range of mosquito and tick repellents. Thanks to an ecological chemistry process inspired by nature, Professor Claude Grison produces the very first 100% natural and organic repellent active ingredient whose effectiveness is 7x higher than that of natural and synthetic active ingredients on the market. A pioneering innovation from French research
To date, no natural repellent spray has proven to be as effective as synthetic repellents. Yet synthetic actives (such as DEET) are known to be toxic to health and the environment. Today, it is essential to protect oneself from vector-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika fever and chikungunya, which are transmitted by mosquitoes even in metropolitan France.
In order to provide a concrete solution to this health issue, Prof. Claude Grison, renowned for her ecological and bio-inspired innovations, has developed a 100% natural active principle. Within the CNRS*, the research director has developed, via an ecological synthesis process, a plant active ingredient from a synergy of organic essential oils with recognised repellent properties.

Crusoé’s formula is composed of hydrated and cyclized Eucalyptus Lemon essential oil, organic Geranium Bourbon essential oil and two natural excipients, ethanol and propanediol.

7x more effective than existing repellent solutions
3 years of research, nearly 4000 behavioural tests and 300 different molecule syntheses have enabled Crusoé to be developed.
Experiments in real conditions have proven that the active ingredient in the formula is 7 times more effective than other repellents, PMD and DEET, with the gorging rate test at the reference centre for anti-vector research, the Vectopôle in Montpellier. In the case of PMD and DEET, we observe an efficacy of 76% and 82% respectively, compared to 97% efficacy for the active ingredient Crusoe.
Mosquito control, a major global health issue
Worldwide, 80% of the population is exposed to disease-carrying mosquitoes and the WHO** counts more than 700,000 deaths per year due to diseases transmitted by these insects. Although historically spared, France is now greatly affected by the scourge represented by the emergence of the tiger mosquito, a fearsome invasive species.
